Fall
is the Best Season for Planting Trees and Shrubs,
and for
Aeration, Mulching and Overseeding
|
| Fall aeration gives grass
plants a little extra boost and provides faster greening. Aeration opens
up the soil to air, water and nutrients and gives plant roots a place to
stretch out and grow. |
|
| Applying a layer of mulch
around your bushes will enhance their appearance. It will also conserve
moisture, insulate the soil, control weeds and prevent erosion. |
|
| Overseeding can inject new
life into tired and thinning lawns or be used to fill in bare areas. Overseeding
an existing lawn every year keeps the lawn looking lush and healthy. |
|
| Water is critical to the
health and appearance of lawns. As a general rule, established turf grasses
need approximately one inch of water per week during the peak growing season.
Less frequent but heavier applications are preferred since they encourage
roots to extend deep into the soil. |
|
| Most lawns require somewhere
between four to six applications of fertilizer annually. Leaving grass
clippings on the ground and allowing them to decompose is equivalent to
approximately one fertilizer application. |
|
| A healthy, well—groomed lawn
is the best way to prevent weeds. Occasional overseeding, especially in
thinner lawns, also contributes to weed prevention. |
